VETTING YOUR PERSONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH

My respect for Black History Month... is living black history every day! At 53 years old… I am living history. Actually, every black person in America of a certain age should pick up a pen on a weekly basis and jot down the remembrances of their past experiences…those that make them the black person they are today.

We are a unique people to this planet! Things have been done to American black people that have not been perpetrated upon any other people on this planet. The reason many peoples around this world seek FREEDOM is because they have seen the struggles of the American black person and do not want any part of what we have experienced at the hands of our government, and at the hands of the majority in this country. And, I don’t blame them!

I respect those historic black people who have come before me -- their names make a list a mile long… beginning and ending with Martin Luther King! I respect those historic black people who are here now! And they are not Herman Cain, Allen West or Michael Steele.

The only historic black person I will name in this missive is President Barak Obama. Like him, or not, he has brought a fundamental change to the way Americans view each other, and our country. Black and white has never looked so polar opposite as it does today… at least to this black man! Black people know who our living historic black people are. I will not name names because I know that certain people, both black and white, wait for lists to appear so that they can pounce upon them and tear them apart. No… I will not name names, but they are out there among us doing their work to make black people a better population.

Read a book about a historic black person you are unfamiliar with. Watch a movie with an all black cast. Listen to some Curtis Mayfield… or anyone else black you choose to listen to. Be nice and respectful of your black youth, your black peers and your black elders. Be black in America and enjoy it! Be your own Black History Month!
